Cal State LA Grounds Crew displays zero-emission electric equipment from Stihl (backpack line trimmer, hedge trimmer, chainsaw, and blower) and Mean Green Machines (60” and 48” zero-turn mowers)

for the past year our facilities service division have utilized — and i didn’t make this up, folks — a mean green ride-on mower. it has a hybrid mulching deck that allows us to recycle our grass clippings. i can’t wait to see what kind of trouble i can get into on a mean green ride-on mower!

Michael Cacciotti, AQMD Board Member and Mayor Pro Tem of the City of South Pasadena, runs the gamut of problems with gas equipment — noise, emissions, smell, smog, particulate matter, pull-starts, fuel spills, replacement parts, etc — while the CSLA Grounds Crew accidentally demonstrates how frustrating pull-starting can be. The live audience was shocked at the instantaneous smoke, noxious fumes, and hazardously loud noise.

our facilities staff have used [stihl] cordless leaf blowers and chain saws that continues to reduce the carbon footprint, causes less noise than gasoline-based equipment, costs considerably less to operate. so it’s really a win-win-win-win!

our introduction to the use of this equipment was made possible by a grant from our great partners, the scaqmd. the american green zone alliance assisted this effort by working to train our staff in the use of the equipment. and with today’s event we’re really just here to say ‘thank you’.
