Santa Monica College is one of the greenest in the nation! In 2008, SMC joined over 600 colleges and universities in commiting to reduce its carbon through the American College and University President's Climate Commitment. The Grounds Department supports the colleges’ mission by providing clean, safe and sustainable learning environments.
AGZA is very proud to be an ally of SMC's inspiring campus-wide sustainability programs, facilities, and operations.
Center for Environmental and Urban Studies
SMC's Center for Environmental and Urban Studies was established in 1994 with the help of the Earth Sciences, Social Sciences, and Life Science department. It is a hub of sustainability, which houses Sustainable Works, student clubs and faculty groups. It provides internships, work study, professional development and performs important research for the college’s environmental programs such as the Environmental Audit, Clean and Green campaign, and most recently the Greenhouse Gas Inventory. It provides students, faculty and staff a place to connect their actions to a broad policy initiative and creates community around environmental interest.
2012 Eco-Hero AWARDS
Santa Monica College named the college’s grounds crew and recycling teams winners of their 2012 EcoHero Awards.
SMC grounds supervisor Tom Corpus and his crew were cited for their many practices and work, including the implementation of “Green Zones” on campus in which only man-powered or battery-powered equipment is used and organic integrated pest management is applied.
